#rbnews international show 08 June 2013: Freedom of the press in Greece (or lack thereof)

This week, on the occasion of the upcoming appeals trial of Kostas Vaxevanis, the journalist who was arrested and tried once already in November 2012 for publishing the Lagarde list in his magazine HOT DOC, the #rbnews international show focused on the issue of freedom of the press in Greece. We were able to interview Kostas Vaxevanis himself, but also Dimitris Trimis, chairman of the Athens Daily Newspaper Editors’ Union, Marios Lolos,  chairman of the Greek Photojournalists’ Union, and his colleague Tatiana Bolari, and Angélique Kourounis, a correspondent for various French-speaking media in Athens, who also acts as the local representative of Reporters Without Borders. This show is part of a series prepared by the radiobubblenews team, which will carry on across the coming week and will seek to discuss the various impediments to the realization of this essential democratic liberty.

Naomi Klein habló con @JaquoUtopie de Radiobubble sobre la crisis económica y del medio ambiente y los efectos del cambio climático en la transformación económica y política. Pero también de su próximo trabajo, la extracción de oro y el movimiento en su contra en Skuriés, y el movimiento "Idle no more" en Canadá.

La forma en que en un momento de desesperación económica los gobiernos y las empresas utilizan la crisis como pretexto para destruir el medio ambiente convenciendo a la gente que esta es la manera más fácil de "conseguir dinero", las tácticas de miedo, la falta de una articulación clara e inspiradora de una visión radicalmente diferente, son algunos de los temas que abordamos, así como el coste que la gente tendrá que pagar si el capitalismo continúa por ese camino destructivo.

Pero también se trata de los movimientos de los pueblos emergentes, el punto de inflexión en la historia a la hora de crear nuestra alternativa, el fracaso de los medios y el tiempo para los nuevos modelos para salir y cambiar el paisaje, la esperanza, el futuro y su muy joven hijo Toma.

Naomi Klein @ Radiobubble: Climate change is our best argument against free trade

Naomi Klein spoke today to Radiobubble's @JaquoUtopie about the economic and environmental crisis and how climate change affects economic and political transformation, but also about her upcoming work, gold mining and the movement opposing it in Skouries, the tar sands and the Idle No More movement in Canada. 

The way that in a moment of economic desperation governments and corporations use the crisis as a pretext to destroy the environment by convincing people that this is the easier way to “get money”, the scare tactics, the lack of a clear and inspiring articulation of a radically different vision are some of the issues they discussed, as well as the cost that people will have to pay if capitalism continues down that destructive road. 

But also about emerging peoples’ movements, the turning point in history when it’s time to create our own alternative, the failure of the media and the time for new models to develop and change the landscape, the hope, the future and her very young, beautiful son Tom.

Zoe is a member of the Human Library project in Greece, an anti-racist initiative in which books are people who have been victims of racism and readers are people who are trying to challenge their own prejudices against the "other".

#rbnews international show 18 May 2013: The letter, spirit and (lack of) enforcement of laws against racism in Greece

In this week's edition of the #rbnews international show, we continued our series about fascism and antifascism in Greece with an interview with @Chiguire79. @Chiguire79 is a lawyer and friend of radiobubble, and he explained to us the existing legal framework against racism and its shortcomings but also what we can expect from the new proposed bill against racism, which was finally brought to parliament yesterday.

In this week's edition of the #rbnews international show, @tsimitakis and @IrateGreek interviewed Michalis Spourdalakis, professor of political science at the University of Athens and Chairman of the Hellenic Political Science Society. We took stock of the political situation of Greece on the anniversary of the elections of 6 May 2012, which was a political earthquake in which Greece's traditional bipartisan system collapsed, leading to the rise of alternative political forces, SYRIZA on the left and, most worryingly, Golden Dawn on the far-right.

1. Les mobilisations de la semaine 

Lundi 21 janvier, le Tribunal de première instance d’Athènes a déclaré illégale et abusive la grève des employés du métro d’Athènes. Cette grève, à laquelle ont aussi participé, de différentes manières, les employés du tram et des trains aériens, a débuté jeudi 17 janvier, suite à l'annonce de l’abolition des accords collectifs et les diminutions de salaires prévus par le Mémorandum. Les employés ont réagi en appelant à une nouvelle grève pour les mardi 22 et mercredi 23 janvier, reconduite le jeudi suite à une assemblée. Par solidarité, les employés des autres transports publics ont organisé des arrêts de travail ce même jour.

Suite à une décision du Tribunal de première instance, la direction de la compagnie du métro a menacé de réquisitionner les travailleurs. Dans le même temps, le ministre des Transports s’est montré très agressif à l’égard des employés, tout en annonçant une modification du cadre juridique des grèves. Par ailleurs, le porte parole du gouvernement a laissé planer la possibilité de licenciements ou sanctions financières contre les employés, dès lors que ceux-ci ignoreraient les décisions de Justice. Tous les grands syndicaux ont réagi à de tels propos. Au terme d’une réunion rassemblant le GSEE, le Centre Ouvrier d’Athènes, la Confédération syndicale des cheminots et les syndicaux des transports publics, décision a été prise de mobiliser les travailleurs de plusieurs secteurs.

On the #rbnews international show on 01 December 2012 we dicussed at length the issue of gold mining in northern Greece and in particular the Skouries forest in Halkidiki.

In tribute to the struggle of the people of Halkidiki, who are threatened by a massive environmental disaster should the mining project materialize, the music we chose to play this week is taken from a compilation of traditional songs produced by the Cultural Association of Ierissos in the 1960s.

Damian Mac Con Uladh (@damomac) investigated the case of Walid, a 29-year-old Egyptian immigrant who was kidnapped and tortured by his employer, a Greek baker, on the island of Salamina last week-end, in what must be one of the most freakish racist crimes committed in Greece. El domingo, 28 de Octubre, un par de horas antes de que finalice el flagrante, fue detenido el periodista Kostas Vaxevanis por haber publicado en su revista Hot Doc la famosa lista Lagarde.

Esta es una lista que incluye más de 2000 nombres de griegos que poseen cuentas bancarias en el banco suizo UBS, y quienes son sospechosos de evadir impuestos. La lista fue enviada al entonces ministro de Finanzas de Grecia, Yórgos Papakonstantinu, por la entonces ministra de Finanzas de Francia (y actual Directora del FMI), Christine Lagarde, en forma de CD. El hecho, seguido de una historia tragicómica, en la cual la lista fue "perdida", el ex ministro Griego de Finanzas y Presidente del PASOK, Evángelos Venizelos, se justificó echando la culpa por la pérdida de la lista a sus asociados y secretarios, mientras que la oposición le acusó de ocultar la lista para cubrir a sus amigos o para poder luego chantajear a otras personas.
