The latest case of censorship in Greece found an unlikely target in a song by famous Greek composer Manos Hadjidakis. 

Deputy Minister of Education Theodoros Papatheodorou ordered last night an ex officio investigation into claims by a primary school music teacher in Thessaloniki that the principal of her school forbade her from teaching Hadjidakis's song Kemal to her 5th-grade class. This was followed today by a question in parliament by New Democracy MP Giannis Michelakis, who called upon the Ministry of Education to take an official position on the matter and condemned the school principal in the harshest of terms, calling the incident "a monument of ignorance, fanaticism and stupidity."

Update 19:35 EEST: The preliminary investigation of the Ministry of Education appears to show that the teacher's claim is correct. The principal has been asked to give a written explanation for her reaction. 

Racist attacks in downtown Thessaloniki

Bloody racist attacks against immigrants took place on Saturday 25 May for the first time in downtown Thessaloniki, highlighting in our city as well the level of barbarism that can result from the rise of racism and fascism. Two immigrants were stabbed, one of them to the neck, in two different parts of the city, and have already reported to the police that their attackers hurled racist threats at them before attacking them.

Specifically, on Saturday 25 May around midday, a group of Greeks heckled African street vendors in the area around Aristotelous square and Tsimiski street [translator's note: the most central area of downtown Thessaloniki], threatening that if they didn't leave the country, they'd kill them. At 4pm, according to eyewitnesses, two persons on a motorbike drove near a 39-year-old vendor from Rwanda and one of them tried to stab him in the neck. The migrant pulled back, thus avoiding the worst but with a light wound to the jugular. He was transferred to the Ippokrateion hospital where his wound was stitched up, while he gave his deposition about the incident to the police.

The report by Costas Lapavitsas and Heiner Flassbeck on the crisis of the Eurozone has been an important step in re-opening the euro debate within the European Left. The political significance of the report was made even more evident by the fact that it was published by the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, and was endorsed by the leadership of Die Linke, especially after Oskar Lafontaine had also recently insisted on the need to consider the exit from the Eurozone as a potential solution for countries of the European South such as Greece. It follows the decision by AKEL the Cypriote left-wing party to propose Cyprus’ exit from the Eurozone, a proposition based upon scientific advice offered by amongst others Lapavitsas and Flassbeck.

The report itself is not a radical or Marxist manifesto. Although Lapavitsas has a strong Marxist background, the report is marked by Flassbeck’s much more Keynesian approach. Moreover, it is not a report with an a priori hostility towards monetary union or currency coordination for Europe, nor is it filled with anticapitalist references. On the contrary it seems to take the internationalization of trade and capital flows as granted. However, it is exactly this kind of critique from within aspects of the dominant economic paradigm that makes it even more interesting.

Naomi Klein spoke today to Radiobubble's @JaquoUtopie about the economic and environmental crisis and how climate change affects economic and political transformation, but also about her upcoming work, gold mining and the movement opposing it in Skouries, the tar sands and the Idle No More movement in Canada. 

The way that in a moment of economic desperation governments and corporations use the crisis as a pretext to destroy the environment by convincing people that this is the easier way to “get money”, the scare tactics, the lack of a clear and inspiring articulation of a radically different vision are some of the issues they discussed, as well as the cost that people will have to pay if capitalism continues down that destructive road. 

But also about emerging peoples’ movements, the turning point in history when it’s time to create our own alternative, the failure of the media and the time for new models to develop and change the landscape, the hope, the future and her very young, beautiful son Tom.

UNICEF report: Rapid deterioration of living conditions in Greece

The  National UNICEF Committee in Greece presented a new report titled: "The state of children in Greece in 2013," which was prepared in collaboration with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and describes the current living conditions of children in Greece, as well as a campaign and initiatives for vaccination of children in Greece and around the world.

The committee emphasizes that the crisis constitutes an inhibitory factor for the implementation of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and for this reason urges Greece not only to  maintain social benefits but to expand them, especially for children. On the contrary, the policy that has been implemented these last  few years with regard to the distribution of social protection expenditure in Greece shows that benefits for the family/children category remain almost constant. The indifference of the public sector has been steady over this period and it seems not to react even under these tough financial conditions. Firstly, in terms of social protection expenditure in Greece, family/children benefits remained unchanged over the past 15 years. Secondly, the way in which the budget is established and implemented does not allow for identification of resources allocated for the implementation of the CRC, nor does the lack of systematic and specific data allow for monitoring compliance with it.

Amnesty International: the situation of human rights in Greece is deteriorating

The Greek chapter of Amnesty International organized a press conference to present the organization's annual report in front of the Aliens' Department in Athens today. This symbolic choice reflects Amnesty's key findings about the situation of human rights in Greece in 2013:

"Allegations of human rights abuses by police, including torture and excessive use of force continued throughout the year. Migrants and asylum seekers faced impediments in registering their asylum applications and were often detained in substandard conditions. Greek Helsinki Monitor: "Some people support freedom of speech... only for racist speech"

The Greek Helsinki Monitor (GHM) issued today a press release ahead of a trial tomorrow involving three of its officials as well as three officials from the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (CBJCG), who are accused of false accusations, witness perjury and libel by Kostas Plevris. Plevris is widely considered as the theoretician of neo-Nazism in Greece and was sued by the GHM and the CBJCG for his book Jews: The Whole Truth. A first tribunal had found him guilty of antisemitism  in 2007, but the sentence was overturned on appeal in 2009 in a decision that was ratified by the Supreme Court in 2010. The Supreme Court decision was deemed scandalous by many, given the contents of the book, which includes for instance chapters titled "The religion of the Jews: crime and misanthropy" or "The Holocaust: evidence of a lie" (you can listen to last Saturday's #rbnews international show on laws against racism in Greece for context on this matter).

A photojournalist denounces the police for detaining him while he was doing his job

Dear colleagues,

With this letter I wish to report an incident that happened to me on May 17th, around 2:20pm on Tsimiski street, near Aristotelous square (Thessaloniki).

As an Associated Press photojournalist in Thessaloniki, I was informed by a colleague that a homeless man was sleeping on a bench in Tsimiski street with a guitar  by his side (just outside the "Folli Follie" shop). Luckily I was at a nearby cafe so I got there in a few minutes.

En concreto, 6 de mayo 2013, se cumplió tres años desde la adopción del Memorando que causó los mayores reajustes políticos de la historia reciente del país, y un año desde las elecciones generales de 2012, cuando esos cambios dramáticos fueron expresados primero a través de las urnas. La sociedad griega está viviendo en un período al cual el tiempo político se condensa a tal grado, que los cambios que se producen cada mes y cada semana difícilmente se pueden ser concebidos por su conciencia colectiva. Desde las elecciones de mayo de 2012, que no dieron lugar a la formación de un nuevo gobierno, sino a repetir las elecciones un mes después, la imagen del país y su paisaje político ha ido cambiando a un ritmo rápido hasta hoy. A la luz de una mayor homenaje al aniversario de un año desde las elecciones de junio del pasado año, cuando el gobierno de coalición de tres partidos de hoy llegó al poder, echamos un vistazo a los hechos y datos que cambiaron en este último año, a partir de las elecciones de mayo del año pasado.

Our friends over at OmniaTV informed us through the hashtag #rbnews this morning that the Muslim Association of Greece received a letter of "anonymous" threats in Greek, English and Arabic. The quotation marks are due to the fact that, while unsigned, the writing paper features a page-wide logo of Golden dawn.

Grecia: Convenio colectivo nacional

Εn el último minuto, es decir, antes de la fecha en que expire el período del convenio colectivo nacional anterior, se llegaron a un acuerdo sobre el convenio colectivo nacional los interlocutores sociales, que fue firmado por todos menos por la asociación patronal griega. LGBT rights in Greece: one new case of State censorship and discrimination

The Athens Pride denounced on Thursday 16 May the decision by the National Council for Radio & Television to ban all Athens Pride publicity spots until the plenary session of the Council can discuss the appropriateness of their broadcast. The reason for given by the Council is the fact that the spots include a lesbian kiss.

This is the second such incident of censorship and discrimination against the LGBT community on Greek media in recent months. In October 2012, State TV channel NET had chosen to edit a kiss between two men out of a episode of Downton Abbey. After viewers reacted angrily on social media, most importantly on Twitter with the hashtag #puritaNET, the channel's director Kostas Spyropoulos had argued that the scene was cut because of the time of the broadcast and the "suitable for all" rating of the show, whereas late-night re-runs would include the scene - ignoring a 2003 ruling by the Council of State which condemned the Council's decision to censor a gay kiss scene on Mega TV channel.

Regional teachers' unions (ELME) voted yesterday on the proposal to strike put forward by the Federation of Secondary Education Public School Teachers (OLME) to stage a strike on the first day of the national university entry examinations on 17 May and then to continue with a five-day strike on 20-24 May. The Communist-affiliated labour union PAME came up with a counter-proposal to hold a strike on 16-17 May only.

Participation was very high nationwide in the ELME assemblies, which voted massively in favour of the strike proposed by OLME, despite an order for civil mobilization of teachers issued preemptively by the government that came in effect today at noon. Under the terms of civil mobilization, teachers who actually go on strike face the risk of losing their jobs, or worse. It remains to be seen if the strike will actually take place or if the vote was merely a gesture of defiance by teachers towards the government.

The demonstration held on Monday evening in Athens against civil mobilization and the vote of the ELME assemblies did however not deter the government, which proceeded today with commandeering all school buildings and asking the police to guard them in order to avoid occupations of school buildings to prevent the exams from taking place. In a statement released today, Amnesty International says that "the use of special government measures to thwart a proposed teachers’ strike in Greece violates the country’s international human rights obligations" and calls the measures "disproportionate and unnecessary."

Le Conseil d'Etat, la plus haute juridiction administrative de Grèce, a rejeté hier la demande de suspension temporaire de l'ordre de mobilisation civile faite par OLME, malgré les doutes quant à la légalité et la constitutionnalité d'un acte législatif qui impose le retour au travail avant même qu'une décision de grève formelle soit officiellement approuvée par les syndicats régionaux.

Les enseignants sont la troisième profession, après les employés du métro d'Athènes et les marins, à être confrontés à un ordre de mobilisation civile depuis que le gouvernement de coalition actuel a été formé. Les grèves des camionneurs et des travailleurs municipaux ont également été cassées de cette manière en 2010 et 2011. Sur 11 ordres de mobilisation civile émis en Grèce depuis la chute de la Junte, 5 ont été émis dans le cadre des politiques d'austérité et de "sauvetage".

Greek secondary education teachers, together with various groups who joined them in solidarity, held a demonstration yesterday in front of parliament to protest the government's decision to issue preemptively a civil mobilization order for 86,000 teachers in order to prevent a possible strike on the first day of the national university entry exams, as proposed by the Federation of Secondary Education Teachers (OLME). The Council of State, Greece's highest administrative court, rejected yesterday a request by OLME for temporary suspension of the civil mobilization order, despite the dubious legality and constitutionality of back-to-work legislation issued before a formal decision to go on strike is officially approved by regional unions.

Teachers are the third professional group, after employees of the Athens metro and sailors, to be hit by a civil mobilization order since the current coalition government was elected to power. Trucking contractors and municipal workers's strikes were also broken in this way in 2010 and 2011. Of a total of 11 civil mobilization orders issued in Greece since the fall of the Junta, 5 were issued in the framework of bailout austerity policies.

Au cours des trois dernières années, la société grecque a traversé une série de mesures d'austérité extrêmement agressives, selon les termes dictés par la troïka (UE-FMI-BCE), qui ont conduit à une grave détérioration des conditions de vie. Elle a également connu une érosion constante des droits démocratiques et des libertés civiles de base. Un des exemples de cette érosion est la tentative par le gouvernement grec de supprimer le droit de grève dans de nombreux secteurs. Les représentants du gouvernement ont à plusieurs reprises insisté sur le fait qu'il est temps de se débarrasser des formes « anomiques » de protestation et de lutte qui ont été le principal héritage du radicalisme de l'après 1974.

Le dernier exemple en est la décision du premier ministre grec A. Samaras d'émettre des ordres de « mobilisation civile » pour tous les enseignants du secondaire en réponse à l'annonce de l'OLME, la Confédération des  enseignants du secondaire, de proposer  à ses syndicats membres de se mettre en grève pendant le démarrage des examens d'entrée à l'université à compter du 17 mai. L'ordre rendu par le premier ministre comprend des références à une potentielle « perturbation importante de la vie sociale et économique du pays » et à de « graves dangers pour l'ordre public et la santé des candidats participant aux examens d'entrée à l'université  », et a été publiée en tant que mesure préventive avant même que la grève ne soit décidée par les syndicats de l'enseignement secondaire le mardi 14 mai.

In the past three years Greek society has gone through a series of extremely aggressive austerity measures, under the terms dictated by the EU-IMF-ECB Troika that have led to a severe deterioration of living conditions. It has also been experiencing a constant erosion of democratic rights and basic civil liberties. Part of it is the attempt by the Greek government to practically abolish the right to strike in many sectors. Government representatives have repeatedly insisted that it is time to get rid of the “anomic” forms of protest and struggle that have been the main legacy of post-1974 radicalism.

The latest such example is the decision of A. Samaras, the Greek Prime Minister, to issue “civil mobilization” orders for all secondary education teachers, because OLME, the Secondary Education Teachers Confederation, has announced that it proposes to its member unions to stage a strike during the University Entry Exams beginning May 17. The order issued by the Prime Minister includes references to a potential “important disruption of the social and economic life of the country” and to “grave dangers for public order and the health of candidates taking the university entry exams”, and was issued as a preemptive measure before the strike is even decided by the local secondary education unions on Tuesday May 14.

Evénements à Skouries le 12 mai 2013

Des affrontements ont eu lieu ce matin dans la région de Chalcidique du Nord, où les habitants protestent contre les activités forestières de la compagnie Hellas Gold dans le lit de la rivière Karatzas, près de la forêt de Skouries.

Selon le blog antigoldgreece, ces événements viennent à la veille d'une réunion qui se tiendra demain matin entre les Comités des habitants contre la mine et la direction de la police locale, afin d'examiner la légalité de la licence opérationelle de la compagnie minière, en ce qui concerne ses activités d'exploitation forestière dans la région de Karatzas. L'autorité municipale forestière, ainsi que le chef du département de la planification urbaine, sont aussi invités à cette réunion. Ces derniers n'ont toujours pas répondu aux accusations que la compagnie mène des activités de construction probablement illégales dans la forêt de Skouries.

Developments in Skouries 12 May 2013

Clashes took place again this morning in north-eastern Halkidki where residents are protesting against logging activities by mining company Hellas Gold in the basin of the Karatzas stream near the Skouries forest.

According to the antigoldgreece blog, these new developments come ahead of a planned meeting tomorrow morning between the Residents' Committees Against Mining and the leadership of the regional police to examine the validity of operational permits held by the mining company for logging activities in the Karatzas area. Also invited to the meeting are the head of the municipal forestry authority and the head of the department of urban planning, who still have to reply to a denunciation of possibly illegal construction activities by the company in the Skouries forest.

Residents opposed to mining plans have been protesting every day this week in the Karatzas area where lumberjacks are working under police guard. This morning, a group of protesters asked the head of the Halkidiki police force to suspend logging activities until the meeting tomorrow. The police officer agreed to take it up with the regional police leadership and left. Approximately one hour later, a group of riot policemen circled the protesters and assaulted them with tear gas. It seems that 4 people were wounded in the clashes that followed, three of them policemen. There have been claims that one policeman was shot but the Polygyros hospital administrator spoke only of scratches and did not mention any gunshot/buckshot wounds.

Also this morning, a group of women who were walking up to the Skouries worksite were assaulted by the riot policemen guarding it. Three were detained and taken to the Halkidiki police HQ in Polygyros. Reports indicate that the police were not allowing lawyers and the local SYRIZA MP inside to see the detainees. @SaveSkouries reported that one woman was beaten by the riot police and had to be taken to the hospital as well.

As of 17:00 EEST reports from residents indicate the presence of a strong police force on the two main roads out of Ierissos.

Update 17:30: Prime Minister Samaras's Director of Communications George Mouroutis is claiming that 7 policemen were wounded  by a "dispersion weapon". Greek social media are awash with ironic comments on this blatant exaggeration.
